Absolutely frustrated with Netgear and this site

Netgear prints this site on their box and touts their use of open source firmware; however, I'm just not seeing any benefits.

1.  If the stock firmware was good, we wouldn't all be looking for open source alternatives.

2.  The guys doing the development seem like hobbyists (that's not a bad thing), but for Netgear to promote the site, I'd expect some full-time developers to be assigned to making dd-wrt, tomato, or openwrt work on the routers.

I've used two routers, flashed the firmware from this site because the stock firmware was either buggy or didn't support openvpn client running on the router.  The "open source" solutions also aren't working.  I didn't come here to learn to program my own router, but rather to use existing third-party firmware.  However, it looks like the open source stuff has to be shoehorned to fit into the Netgear hardware and then doesn't work well once it has.

I chose Netgear because it seemed to support the open source community rather than try to hinder it, but it actually seems that Netgear is just trying to use the community as a sales tool without actually offering any added value.

I'm not sure where to turn at this point for quality networking products that are feature-rich and just work.

E4200 Advice

Hi,

Today I purchasd a E4200 v1 which has 'Tomato Firmware v1.28.04.99 MIPSR2Toastman-RT-N K26 USB Ext' installed.

I'd like to use the router for -

  • UnoTelly (I can only see DD-WRT instructions on their website)
  • Connect a USB HDD
  • Connect to both 2.4 and 5 ghz channels

Reading some of the forums some of the firmwares dont have USB support whilst others dont have 5ghz.

I already have a E1200 running DD-WRT but wanted this E4200 for the USB and 5 ghz.

So should should I stick with the Tomato version already installed, install a better Tomato version or install DD-WRT?

Appreciate any advice

Thanks

Using Plex while using router VPN

Hi All,

I just flashed my R7000 with the new Kong Mod, set everything up including my VPN (Private Internet Access). Everything is working great, except I cannot access my Plex server remotely (from outside my network). Does anyone have a router setup, or script, to let Plex either go around the VPN or though it somehow? Any help would be great as I am just now learning the ins and outs of DDWRT. Which, by the way, is AWESOME!! Many thanks to the folks that put in the hard work creating. Thanks again for your help.

Availability of Open Source Firmware for Netgear D7000 Modem Router

Hi,

Help Compile and Promote additional 3rd Party Resources and Support for Netgear's Nighthawk AC1900 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router. (D7000-100UKS)

This specific model is a 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit Modem/Router for the UK market and advertises itself as: 'Works with DSL ISPs like BT Infinity, TalkTalk Fibre and more' . I myself am using it with Plusnet's Unlimited Fibre Extra Subscription.

After a bit of Googling and searching the normal sources of Information (openwrt.org / dd-wrt.com etc.) I get the impression there currently isin't much Information or Community activity focusing on this particular model. I'm wondering why this might be, I mean it's only an R7000 with a A/DSL Modem built in... isin't it?
Does any one have any Ideas or resources they are willing to share?

Thanks in advance.

Best way to display something to an attached screen?

I would like to modify the code on a router (any model) to output messages to a screen, what would be the easiest way to do that? I've considered trying to find a displayport driver that works in linux so I can use a USB port, I'd prefer something more like a usb-serial adapter to drive an lcd panel. Does anyone have experience with this?

Multiple duckdns ddns domain on ddwrt

Hi everyone.

I recently wanted to put multiple Duckdns domains on a single router without using Dnsomatic.

Here is my code

inadyn --dyndns_server_name www.duckdns.org --username nouser --password ********-****-****-****-************ --update_period 60 --forced_update_period 3600 --alias "your domainname" --verbose 5 --dyndns_server_url /nic/?

I noticed Duck the inadyn command given by the duckdns website was not updating the IP. So I added "--forced_update_period 3600" to it and it started to work.

Just place it in your administration Command Shell start up and save it.

This is a follow up to my old post

VPN solution for Smart home and media sharing.

Hello All,

I’ve spent the last 2 months researching for the right solution but with 2 children under 2 years old it can be very difficult to find time.

I’m looking for the best security solution using VPN with Private Internet Access to secure my home network.

My ISP is Rogers with 100Mbps(average 150Mbps) down and 10Mbps up. I have 2 router I could use which are Netgear R7000 and DLink EA2700.

Most important is to secure my smart home devices. I have a Smartthings Hub, Nest thermostat, Amcrest 1080P IP cam(I will have to setup port forwarding) and WeMo light switch. Future purchases will be Harmony remote, Ring doorbell and more IP cams. Getting all this into running on a VPN is important. These devices do not require tons of bandwidth and exactly why I am thinking of running these on the DLink EA2700 DD-WRT router(VPN speed of 20Mbps).

My other concern is VPN speed drops because of encryption which I primarily need for Amazon Fire TV 2, Minix Neo x7, DLNA speakers and ChromeCast. If I connect this to Netgear R7000 with DD-WRT, I only achieve about 30 Mbps with VPN.

If I connect the 2 routers to my modem/router(Hitron CGN 3-ROG) from my ISP, I will get roughly 60 Mbps total VPN speed. Can i get these under the same local network to share media files?

I was also hoping to use the DLink EA2700 as a repeater to extend my coverage.

Are there any solution that will work for me?

Can I get a Raspberry Pi for encryption? And how is the impact for VPN speed?

Can't login after applying Tomato by shibby for NETGEAR R6250 (Initial Flash File)

Did I brick my router?  It's a Netgear R6250.

I tried going from dd-wrt to Tomato by applying the "Tomato by shibby for NETGEAR R6250 (Initial Flash File)."

It seemed to have worked, router is pinging back at 192.168.1.1

I get a response hitting the router through web browser and ssh (putty).

When I try to log in through web browser or SSH, no combination of user/pass seems to work:

  • admin/admin
  • admin/password
  • root/admin
  • root/password

I may have messed up, any help would be appreciated.

Why is there no support for the R6220?

A few months ago I impulsively decided to try flashing OpenWRT on my dinasaur of router without thinking about the fact that I needed to be online the next day. To make a long story short, after a quick run to Best Buy and failing to pick up a cell signal in there, I walked away with the r6220 after being assured it was compatible with at least DD-WRT and probably OpenWRT. When I finally got around to giving the open source firmware a shot again, I discovered that there is next to no support for this model (I found a start here) , despite a number of positive reviews I found. It was past the return deadline, so I ended up keeping it and thought it might be a cool project to work on once I get a new router. I was hoping someone could tell me why this model doesn't seem to have any open source support, and if feasible what I'd need to know to make a build (or finish the started one I found). I'm not too worried about bricking it at this point, and am always looking for new tech stuff to learn. If anyone can fill in some of the blanks here, I'd appreciate. Thanks!

Open Source Firmware security

There's quite a lot of talk about router security, and patches not being applied frequently enough by manafacturers such as Netgear..

So I am thinking of moving to the open source DD WRT Kong Mod firmware, partly for this reason, and partly to enable me to try a few t.hings that the stock firmware won't let me do easily (such as make an arp setting stick across reboots).

I have another stock router (from TalkTalk, not good, having firmware about 2 years old with no sign of an update) which I can use to rescue me if the change to my R6250 goes wrong, so the risk isn't too high for me.  I also have a copy of the stock Netgear firmware.

My question is whether the open source firmware obtained here is more likely to be kept reasonably up to date with security fixes, and is worth doing for that reason alone.

Any views?

Convert Small script from dD-WRT to tomato

Hi guys!

I just switch firmware from dd-wrt to Tomato because of a software issue I wasn't able to fix on the DD-WRT.

Now this particular issue is solved with the Tomato firmware!

Only thing is that I want to run a startup script that I was running on DD-WRT, but the script won't seem to work with Tomato and I have no idea how to convert it!

Here is the script, if anyone can help me convert it, it will be so much appreciated!

/usr/sbin/ip addr add 24.37.249.84/29 dev vlan1 /usr/sbin/iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING 1 -p all -s 192.168.1.152-j SNAT --to 24.37.249.84 /usr/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d 24.37.249.84 --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.152 /usr/sbin/iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp -d 192.168.1.152 --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

I think the error may be caused by the SNAT part, but I'm really not sure!

Thank you so much for any help!
Have nice day

Logging software

Due to the growing use and complexity of my network as well as some extra available hardware it's time to move router logging to a bigger more robust host. I have been looking at wallwatcher and link logger but both of these tools seem to be very out of date and unsupported. I don't know if any of them will run in Win10 although I can use Win 7 for now (until MS kills Win 7 support which will probably be tomorrow). Are there any modern alternatives or is this effort effectivly dead. Is the monitoring/logging market for consumer grade routers dead? Thanks for the input.

Relationship to the dd-wrt site

I have some questions that have come up as I have been troubleshooting a syslog issue with the  WNDR4500v2 build. Can someone clarify the relationship between this site and the dd-wrt ste. This site obviously supports Net gear products to a much greater extent but the dd-wrt site host the documentation repository. There in lies my problem. I am trying to troubleshoot syslog  traffic messages being tagged kernel.warning and have not been able to find any related documentation. The dd-wrt site suggest upgrading to latest build not understanding I am running the latest for this old router. Even more interesting the dd-wrt site still shows the wndr4500v2 as a work in progress. I am not above doing the required research I am just trying to put the pieces together. I know my knowledge is lacking and I am looking to correct that problem. Thanks,
